Wollongong Dog-Friendly Beach & Park Guide

Wollongong City Council has made it straightforward for dog owners with a simple colour-coded signage system across all beaches and parks in the Local Government Area. Whether you're a local dog walker in Wollongong or visiting the Illawarra with your dog, understanding the three zones is essential before heading to the sand.
Understanding the Zone System
Green Zone
Dogs allowed off-leash all day, year-round. These are the prime spots for a Wollongong dog walk.
Orange Zone
Dogs on-leash only. Permitted before 9am and after 4pm (winter) or after 6pm (summer, from September school holidays to Anzac Day).
Red Zone
Dogs not permitted at any time. Includes the busiest swimming beaches, areas within 100m of a lifeguard-patrolled zone, and all rock platforms.
Off-Leash (Green Zone) Beaches — North to South
The following beaches are designated green zone off-leash areas within the Wollongong City Council area, listed from north to south along the Illawarra coastline:
Stanwell Park Beach
Stanwell Park NSW 2508
Partial off-leash area — check signage on arrival. BBQ facilities and lagoon access nearby.
Sharkies Beach, Coledale
Coledale NSW 2515
A quieter, local favourite tucked between the escarpment and the sea.
Little Austinmer Beach
Austinmer NSW 2515
Rock pools and a relaxed atmosphere. Great for dogs that love to explore.
